To begin with, to become a successful freight broker you need more than license. There are a few other requirement that must be met also to eliminate the risk of failure. You must be competitive and understand the sales process and the art of negotiation.
Only 50% of the over 4,000 licensed freight brokers in the U.S. work full time. What that means, is that in fact the other 50% aren't fully qualified to meet the standards that those that work put forth.
The biggest obstacle that today’s freight brokers report that they struggle with is the new computer technology that has been put in the place in the industry as a whole. The biggest mistake that far too many new and struggling freight brokers make is to assume that just because they can chat and check email on their computer, that they are “computer literate.
There are several variations of software that have been introduced in the freight shipping industry and it is imperative that today’s freight broker understand how to use them all. Also, because a freight broker will be managing business accounts, one must have at least a basic comprehension of business accounting procedures. What this all means, is that the best step that today’s prospective freight broker can take is to complete a course of formal study before obtaining their license.
