Transportation Terms

The transportation industry has many terminologies; a new person entering the industry has to be aware. Here are a few popular terms being used in transportation industry.

Freight – Materials that has to be delivered to a desired place is known as freight.

FOB- A trade term requiring the seller to deliver goods on board a vessel designated by the buyer

LTL- Less than Truck Load

Lumpers- a laborer who loads and unloads freight

Back-haul (a) to haul a shipment back over a part of a route traveled; (b) traffic moving in direction of light flow when a carrier’s traffic on a route is heavier in one direction than the other.

Billed weight- the weight shown in a freight bill.

Bill of lading- written transportation contract between shipper and carrier

Bobtail- truck operating without a trailer.
